Tom Varnon has been drawing since he was a little boy in church. “I think my Mom gave me the pen and paper to keep me still. Thanks Mom. See what you started?” Although he never took art in high school, he was always drawing in the margins of his notes and assignments. “I was totally bored in High School. Drawing kept me in class, most of the time.” In college, Tom studied Art and Psychology. He feels this combination has given him unique perspective on life and the world around.
After college, Tom spent about five years as a counselor working with troubled teens before his first job creating illustrations for Tech Manuals. “In those days, one had to really know how to draw.” He continued working as an Illustrator and Graphic Designer in the Defense industry until an eight-month break in employment. “I found this unemployment period a terrific opportunity. It got me out of a demanding, unforgiving work environment and it gave me a stress free time I could rediscover painting.” It has been about three years since Tom found his brushes again. He now balances a relaxed work schedule with time to paint.
“I have been a technical artist for most of my career. Now I have a strong desire to paint mostly organic subjects. Painting people interests me the most. I enjoy capturing an essence or attitude of a person or a pet.” On most any evening, you may find Tom working on a portrait or a still life in his studio while his cat, Raphael, critiques his work.
